The term “lizard brain” popularly refers to the so-called primitive parts of the human brain. Originating from a discredited theory of evolutionary brain development, the idea that reptiles–and amphibians by relation–are unthinking animals of instinct is crumbling under new scientific research. Far more is happening than meets the reptilian eye. Amphibians have long shown signs of sentience, and some species even demonstrate high levels of cognitive functioning like that of mammals.
