Ecological Worldviews: Panentheism

Derived from the Greek pan-en-theos, meaning “all is in god” or “god is in all,” Panentheism is a concept that seeks to articulate the relationship between God and the universe. Whereas pantheism (pan-theos, or “all is god”) does not distinguish between God and material reality, and dualistic views like classical theism stress an essential divide between God and the world, Panentheism maintains that God and the universe are located within one another and yet remain distinct. Engagement with Panentheism has spread in recent decades, especially within science-religion dialogue, ecological theology, and process thought.
