Earth Law: Asia

Earth Law in Asia reflects an evolving landscape of legal innovation, ecological ethics, and transnational collaboration. Throughout the continent, institutions and communities wield interdisciplinary research, capacity building, and legal reform to align human systems with ecological limits. Countries such as India, Indonesia, South Korea, and China are pioneering new approaches through judicial recognition of nature’s rights and legal personhood for rivers, animals, and ecosystems—often drawing from Indigenous, religious, and community-based traditions. These movements infuse legal frameworks with pluralistic, intergenerational, and Earth-centered values, while regional courts and civic actors challenge extractivism, militarism, and corporate impunity. Together, these efforts represent a dynamic shift toward legal systems that uphold ecological civilization, environmental justice, and the shared flourishing of people and planet.
