Antarctica: Engaged Projects

Further resources, if available, can be found in our full bibliography.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC)

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) is a global network of environmental organizations focused on protecting Antarctica and its surrounding waters. Founded in 1978, ASOC is the only NGO with observer status at Antarctic Treaty meetings. It works on key issues like climate change, marine conservation, sustainable tourism, and shipping regulation. ASOC advocates for marine protected areas, responsible fisheries, and stronger environmental safeguards to ensure that Antarctica remains a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.

Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), founded in 1982, serves as the primary international authority for protecting Southern Ocean marine life. It adopts an ecosystem-based approach to balance sustainable harvesting with biodiversity protection across a vast Convention Area covering about 10 percent of the world’s oceans. Its structure includes a consensus-driven Commission, a science advisory committee, and Hobart-based Secretariat. The 27 member States and 10 acceding countries implement and fund conservation measures, supported by compliance monitoring, research programs, and capacity-building initiatives to uphold its environmental mandate.

Antarctic Rights: A Voice for Antarctica

Antarctic Rights campaigns to recognize Antarctica and the Southern Ocean as autonomous entities with legal rights and a formal voice in decision-making. The initiative highlights escalating threats such as climate change, pollution, overfishing, and argues these challenges overwhelm the Antarctic Treaty System. It promotes an Antarctica Declaration to shift governance toward eco-centric principles and advocates for representative frameworks that safeguard ecosystems with rights-based protections.

Agenda Antártica (AA)

Agenda Antártica is a Latin American NGO founded in 2012 that advocates for Antarctic and Southern Ocean conservation through policy advocacy, education, and coalition-building. As a publisher of the bilingual Journal of Antarctic Affairs and an ASOC member, the organization promotes marine protected areas, renewable energy use, microplastic awareness, and youth leadership initiatives. Through governmental lobbying and public outreach, it influences regional and international policy to safeguard Antarctic ecosystems and foster sustainable stewardship among future generations
